~ TEA is an acronym meaning Taking Effective Action, for spirit, mind, and body health. It is a spiritually based health education organization based in Prince George’s County Maryland. TEA specializes in wellness education programs, products, and cooperative efforts with others to enable women and girls to achieve and maintain optimal health.
~ The goal of TEA is to focus on the often-unrecognized obstacles that hinder women and girls from enjoying optimal spirit, mind, and physical health. TEA strives to accomplish this goal primarily through action-oriented, skill-building presentations, discussions, and hands-on demonstrations where participants are given the knowledge and resources to live a healthier, wealthier life.
~ TEA ’s first conference was held in 2007 with 33 participants. The Second Annual TEA Conference in 2008 conference had 67 attendees. The 2009 conference had 108 attendees.” The Fourth Women’s TEA Health Conference will be Saturday, October 22, 2011.
Dr. Gertie Loretta Hurley
Dr. Gertie Loretta Hurley is the founder of TEA. She earned a B. S. in Community Service Education from Howard University, an MBA from Loyola College, Baltimore, Maryland and an M.Div. /D.Min. from United Theological Seminary, Dayton, Ohio. Dr. Hurley is Publisher/Editor of Fruit for the Spirit, a daily devotional, and an ordained minister. She serves on the ministerial staff of Brown Memorial A.M.E. Church, Washington, D.C. under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Henry Y. White, pastor. She is a sought after preacher, speaker, and teacher. Her professional experience includes positions as Extension Faculty with the University of Maryland, Marketing Specialist with the National Archives and the U.S. Department of Commerce, and as a Public Affairs Specialist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food Safety and Inspection Service.
As a part of her ministry, Dr. Hurley conducts health education workshops and seminars for women and also serves as a keynote speaker at women’s retreats, and other events. She hosts and speaks at “Women Cluster Groups" and gatherings regarding "Spiritual and Health" renewal. Dr. Hurley is also a former co-host for a local radio talk show, “Abundant Living.” She presented a TEA health program in St George, Bermuda in August 2008. Dr. Hurley has received numerous honors and recognitions for her community outreach. To name a few, she received a Special Recognition Award for developing and implementing an innovative health program from the Prince George's County Maryland Health Department, and the Director’s Merit Award from the HHS, Indian Health Services, Tucson Area Arizona Office.
Dr. Hurley loves to reflect on the Scriptures, “I pray that God, who gives peace, will make you completely holy. And may your spirit, soul, and body be kept healthy and faultless until our Lord Jesus Christ returns” (1 Thess 5:23, CEV). Dr. Hurley is a woman on a mission to impact, transform, and empower women to present themselves spiritually, mentally, and physically whole in the Kingdom of God.
